Give each course one round: starter = Round 1, main = Round 2, dessert = Round 3. And here's the twist that makes it work for a small table: the host doesn't know who did it either, because the answer waits in a sealed envelope until dessert is cleared.
The short answer
1. Each course opens one round: the host reads a short script, reveals three evidence cards, and every guest opens the next section of their booklet.
2. The main course is the longest, so Round 2 gets the most time (35 minutes, against 25 for the starter and dessert).
3. After dessert everyone writes an accusation, then any guest opens the sealed answer and reads it aloud, so the host gets to guess as well.
Let the food set the pace. A new round gives the table fresh things to talk about exactly when people sit down with a new plate. This is the full-evening timeline from the Host Guide of The Thistledown Supper; the same shape works for any three-round mystery.
| Segment | What happens | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Name tags and detective notes go out. | 15 |
| Welcome | Opening script; each guest introduces their character in about a minute. | 15 |
| Starter · Round 1 | Serve the starter, read Script 2, reveal evidence cards 1–3, everyone opens Round 1. | 25 |
| Main · Round 2 | Serve the main, read Script 3, reveal cards 4–6, unfold Round 2. | 35 |
| Dessert · Round 3 | Serve dessert, read Script 4, reveal cards 7–9, open Round 3. | 25 |
| Accusation | Quiet time with notes, then everyone fills in a ballot. | 10 |
| Reveal | A guest opens the sealed solution and reads the ending; score ballots; awards. | 15 |
| Total | 140 |
Booklet page 3 folds on a dashed line, so the Round 2 section stays hidden until the main course arrives. That small physical detail stops anyone reading ahead between courses.

Autumn, the 1930s. Bartholomew "Barty" Thistle, a retired jam magnate, has invited a few old friends to the Harvest Supper at Thistledown House. Before the soup was served, Barty took a glass of elderflower cordial in the study, sat down for a rest and never woke up. Someone at the table knows why.
The suspects are the family's heir, the family doctor, the steward who has run the house for twenty-five years, the family solicitor, a food critic, the head gardener who makes the cordial every June, a newspaper reporter and a visiting chef. Every character has a motive, an opportunity and a red herring. Nothing is gruesome: no injuries are described, there is no romance and nobody is asked to drink.
The starter cards set the scene with three physical things (a cordial glass, a garden ledger and a solicitor's envelope). The main course and dessert bring six more cards and a new section of every booklet, so stories that sounded fine over soup can start to wobble by the main. We won't say more than that here.
For a small dinner, the story must not break when someone cancels. In The Thistledown Supper four core characters hold the whole clue trail and are always played; optional characters join in number order. The host takes booklet 10 or 11 and plays as a suspect.
| Players | Booklets | Who's at the table |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 10–13 | Rowan Thistle (heir), Ellis Fairweather (family doctor), Morgan Pike (steward), Sage Whitlock (family solicitor) |
| 5 | 10–14 | the four above + Harper Vale, food critic |
| 6 | 10–15 | the four above + Harper Vale + Quinn Ashby, head gardener |
| 7 | 10–16 | + Avery Lark, newspaper reporter |
| 8 | 10–17 | + Jules Marchetti, visiting chef |
How much does an optional role get at 8 players? The same as a core role: a 4-page booklet with a public cover, a secret page, and for each course things to share, two questions for named suspects and a small task. The difference is what their information does. The solution can be reached from the four core booklets and the nine evidence cards, so optional players add suspects, alibis and red herrings rather than carrying a clue nobody else has. That is why the game still works if an optional guest cancels, and why a quieter guest can take an optional role without stalling the case.
Print at 100% ("actual size"), single-sided for the booklets. Page totals for The Thistledown Supper, as listed in its Start Here file:
| Players | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pages to print | 45 | 51 | 56 | 61 | 66 |
For six players, the 56 pages are: Host Guide 12, cast list 2, six booklets × 4 = 24, evidence cards 3, name tags and place cards 2, accusation ballots 2, detective notes 6, and the sealed solution 5 (print it without reading it). Black-and-white printing works for everything.
Choose dishes that can be plated or served from one pot, so you are not stuck in the kitchen when a round starts: a soup for the starter, a roast or tray bake for the main, and a crumble or tart that sits in a warm oven until dessert.
I planned for 6, but only 4 can come. Does it still work?
Yes. The four core booklets and nine evidence cards hold the complete case; use booklets 10–13 only.
Is it OK for teens or grandparents?
Yes, it is a cozy game: nothing gruesome, no romance and no drinking tasks.
How much reading is there?
Each round's section of a booklet is under 180 words, so guests read in about a minute and get back to talking.
