What it is

If your classroom Wi-Fi is slow, filtered or missing, online quiz sites are a gamble. If your school won't let students make accounts or send data to outside sites, many tools are ruled out. PowerPoint templates work offline, but you retype every word into every slide.

ESL Offline Classroom Games Pack is a folder of 10 teacher-led classroom games. They run in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox straight from your computer or a USB stick. Open START-HERE.html and paste your vocabulary into the box. Then click any game. The list goes with you, so one unit's words give you a week of review: Quiz Board on Monday, Letter Guess on Tuesday, Hot Potato on Friday. The list travels inside the link, not in browser storage, so it works the same in every browser.

The games are Quiz Board (category and points tiles), Spin Wheel (random word or student), Hidden Picture, Letter Guess (balloons, no gallows), Hot Potato (hidden random timer), Memory Match (word ↔ meaning), Unscramble, Quick Fire, Scoreboard and Quiz Choice (four answers with shapes and colours). Hidden Picture has 20 original drawings built in: the 15 sample animals plus apple, banana, carrot, egg and fish. A matching word is hidden as a picture. Other words are hidden as big text, or you can drop in your own picture.

The word lists are plain text, one entry per line. Separators can be Tab, =, | or - , and lines starting with # become Quiz Board categories. Each game takes 5–100 entries. You can save up to 200 named lists in your browser, and Export / Import .txt moves them to another computer.

Each game has a score strip for 2–6 teams. Click a team's name to rename it, and use the −/+ buttons and a custom-points button. For one-to-one lessons, choose 2 teams (e.g. "Mai" and "Teacher"). The separate Scoreboard supports 2–8 teams, undo and a timer. Keyboard shortcuts in every game: Space (start / next), F (full screen), Esc (close), ? (rules and keys).

The pack includes a 1-page Quick Start and a 12-page Teacher Guide (one page per game with steps, keys and two classroom variations), each in US Letter and A4. All artwork is original, and the sounds are generated in the browser.

FAQ

Do I need internet at all?
Only to download the ZIP. After you unzip it, every game works with no connection. No file loads anything from the web.

Do I have to paste my list again in every game?
No. Paste it once on START-HERE (or in any game) and click a game. Inside a game, the Games button opens another game with the same list. The list is passed in the link, so this works in Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox.

How is this different from Wordwall or Baamboozle?
They are online services with accounts and subscriptions. They also do things this pack doesn't, such as student assignments on their own devices. This pack runs offline from a folder, stores nothing online and costs $19 once ($12 in launch week). See the comparison image above.

Can I use Chinese, Japanese or Korean meanings?
Yes. Paste them after the separator, e.g. rabbit = 兔子 (tùzi) or apple → りんご · 사과 separated by a Tab. Two sample lists show this.

Can I share it with colleagues or my school?
The license covers one teacher on all of their own classes and devices. Please don't share the files; each teacher needs their own copy.

What if it doesn't work for me?
