How to plan a murder mystery party

A murder mystery party is a dinner or drinks party where every guest plays a character, and the whole room works together to solve a cozy whodunit. Planning one takes less time than it sounds: about four weeks of light, steady steps. The planner above turns those steps into real dates for your party. Here is the plan in plain words.

  1. Four weeks before: count your guests and pick a game written for that number and your occasion. Set the date and start time, then send invitations with a clear RSVP date. Decide whether you will serve a sit-down dinner, a buffet or finger food.
  2. Two weeks before: confirm final numbers and give every guest a character. Send each guest a short character intro and a costume hint, so they can dress up from what they already own.
  3. One week before: print the booklets, clue cards, name tags and ballots. Read the host guide from start to finish once, and gather candles, props and a playlist.
  4. Three days before: shop, then ask a friend to cut the clue cards and seal them in envelopes. That way the host can play and guess along with everyone else.
  5. On the night: follow a simple timeline: arrivals and name tags, the opening read aloud, two or three rounds of clues, food, accusations on paper ballots, the reveal, then awards.

How long does a murder mystery party take? Plan on 90 minutes for a drinks-and-snacks evening and about two and a half hours if dinner is part of the game. A short 60-minute version works for an office lunch hour if you keep the rounds brisk.

What if my numbers change? Choose a game with optional roles. Couples can share one character, and in a big office group, small teams can share a role. The guest count field above shows which of our games fits 4, 8, 10, 12, 20 or 40 players.

Keep it cozy. The best evenings are about bluffing, costumes and laughing at wild theories, not scares. Give out a few awards at the end, such as Super Sleuth or Best Costume, so the quiet guests get a moment to shine too.
